A NEW SOLUTION FOR TREATING DENTAL DECAY: REMINOVA
A New Way to Save Teeth
On 16 June 2014, there was a press release for Reminova, a potentially exciting new product for treating dental decay. Instead of drilling and filling teeth, this products seeks to remineralize the tooth thereby saving existing tooth structure and converting affected tooth back to a normal healthy condition. As a practicing dentist for over 35 years, this an exciting innovation if it can do what it sets out to do. My concern is that there are lots of bacteria demineralizing the tooth and destroying the matrix of minerals which is tooth structure.
Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralization
According to the press release, “ The two-step method developed by Reminova first prepares the damaged part of the enamel outer layer of the tooth, then uses a tiny electric current to ‘push’ minerals into the tooth to repair the damaged site. The defect is remineralised in a painless process that requires no drills, no injections and no filling materials. Electric currents are already used by dentists to check the pulp or nerve of a tooth; the new device uses a far smaller current than that currently used on patients and which cannot be felt by the patient.”
The technique is known as “Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation (EAER).
This technique has been developed and being promoted by King’s College London, and could be available to dentists within three years. I hope this technology is a success.
