MOUTH RINSE SIDE EFFECTS
Even mouth rinse can have side effects.
About Chlorhexidine
For example, the mouth rinse Chlorhexidine, also known as Peridex, can infrequently cause difficulties. Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial mouthrinse for dental patients who are being treated for periodontal disease. After a deep cleaning or periodontal surgery this rinse is the mouth wash of choice and has been for many years.
In the past I have encountered a few patients who report that their energy levels were severely lowered while using this product. As can be the case with any drug, a patient can be hypersensitive to it and have an unusual side effect. There can also be reactions that are very similar to allergic reactions such as “ skin rash , itch, generalized swelling, breathing difficulties, light headedness, rapid heart rate, upset stomach or diarrhea,” as indicated in drugs.com. When this happens this rinse should be discontinued and something else used in its place.
Gum and Tooth Tonic
There is a product called Gum and Tooth Tonic from Dental Herb Company that I like very much. It contains natural products and seems to eliminate the weird reactions that a patient might experience with chlorhexidine. After a patient completes a bottle of chlorhexidine (as long as they’re not allergic) I switch them to Gum and Tooth tonic. As a matter of fact, I use it myself and keep it in each treatment room in my office.
As is the case with any medication it is important that you can make the connection between taking a drug and having a reaction soon after. Always alert the prescribing doctor who may be able to prescribe something more compatible for you.
