What can be done with loose lower front teeth?
The lower incisors are not very long teeth. Commonly these teeth are not straight and that makes them difficult to keep clean. This situation can be a contributing factor to periodontal disease, which over time creates less bone to anchor a tooth or several of the lower teeth in the jaw. The teeth get loose and this can be a bit scary.
To stabilize the teeth, they can be splinted together. This can be done with a wire or with a bonded material, placed on the back and/or front of the teeth. On occasion, the periodontist may be able to add some bone and extend the life of these teeth. More often, these are too far gone.
Now comes the choices of what to do if teeth are lost: A removable partial denture can be fabricated to replace the missing teeth. The dentist will take impressions of the teeth before they are to come out. Then a denture is fabricated. When the teeth are removed, the dentist will insert the partial denture and perform any adjustments to help make that comfortable. After healing of the gum tissues, the denture would be relined, or a more permanent partial denture will be made.
Most people would rather not take their teeth out at night, although this is the least expensive option. For the permanent teeth options, dental implants can be placed in the front and permanent crowns cemented on them. The amount of bone is a consideration in this choice, and an additional surgery or surgeries may be required to provide enough bone to support the implant. The other permanent option is to have a fixed bridge made. For this the lower canines (assuming the incisors are not salveagable) would be drilled for crowns, and they would help to anchor the bridge. In this case, there needs to be enough bone to secure a bridge. In my experience, this restoration works very well and typically lasts a very long time.
A few other points to keep in mind. If your lower teeth are not straight, getting braces or Invisalign can help preserve the teeth over time and you are considerably less likely to have to experience such a dental disaster. Also, if you are losing bone and it can be picked up earlier in your life, more conservative treatments can be done to help bolster the bone and preserve it, hopefully for the full extent of your life.
